Probiotic CFU Count: Does More Always Mean Better?
Some labels advertise 100 billion CFU as if bigger automatically means better. The actual dose-response research tells a more specific story.
What CFU actually measures
CFU stands for colony-forming units — a count of live, viable bacteria in a dose at the time of testing. It's a real, meaningful measurement, but it only tells you how many organisms were alive when tested, not how many survive digestion or how effectively they work in your specific gut environment.
The dose-response relationship is real, but not linear
There is genuine evidence for a dose-response relationship in probiotics — higher CFU counts can produce a measurably bigger effect, up to a point. A 2015 analysis of 22 studies found that doses of 5 billion CFU or more per day were more effective than lower doses specifically for preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. But past a certain threshold, additional CFU doesn't reliably translate into additional benefit — the limiting factor shifts from raw bacterial quantity to how well the specific strain survives and functions in the gut.
Why strain-specificity matters more than raw count
This is the detail most "bigger number" marketing skips: most evidence-based probiotic research uses 1 billion to 10 billion CFU per day of a specific, studied strain — and one billion CFU of the right strain for a given purpose can outperform 50 billion CFU of a less targeted blend. The clinically meaningful comparison isn't "which product has the highest number" — it's "does this product's dose match what was actually used in research for the specific strain(s) it contains."
