How it works

The chemistry: what ScratchX actually does

ScratchX is a fine-cut paint cleaner that contains microscopic abrasives. Worked into a light scratch or blemish, those abrasives gently level the clear coat immediately around the defect — polishing down the surrounding surface until it's roughly even with the bottom of the scratch, which is what makes the mark visually disappear. It's a leveling/polishing action, not a filler — it doesn't add material into the scratch to hide it, which is why it only works on defects that are shallow to begin with.

The drill pad: why it matters

Buffing ScratchX in by hand works, but it's slow and the pressure/speed you apply varies with fatigue. Meguiar's 4" foam pad mounts on a standard household power drill (not included) and, per the manufacturer, "the drill works, so you don't have to" — it delivers more consistent rotating pressure across the treated area in less time than hand-buffing, while remaining gentle enough on glossy clear coats when used correctly (medium speed, keep the pad moving, don't dwell in one spot).

What this kit won't fix

Be honest with yourself about the scratch before you buy this. ScratchX and the drill pad only remove or level defects that sit in the clear coat layer — light scratches, swirl marks, scuffs, paint transfer, fingernail marks around door handles. If you can catch your fingernail in the scratch, or if you can see a different color (primer, base paint, or bare metal) at the bottom of it, this kit will not fix it — that's a job for touch-up paint, wet-sanding and re-clearing, or a body shop, not a polish-and-buff product.

Do I actually need a power drill to use it?

The kit is built around the drill-mounted pad for speed and consistency — that's the whole point of the "quik" in the name — but you can work ScratchX in by hand with a microfiber applicator if you don't have a drill. It'll just take considerably more time and effort to get the same result.

Is it safe on all paint colors and finishes?
